As we all know, it’s not enough to just give a direct answer followed by a reason. If your response is too short, you might sound hesitant or underdeveloped. So, to tackle this, let’s look at a simple and logical approach to make your answers longer and more cohesive.
Here are 6 effective ways to expand your responses in IELTS Speaking Part 1:

Adding Similar Information

After giving your direct answer and reason, you can add extra details using connectives such as and, also, besides that, on top of that, too, plus, apart from that, moreover, and in addition.
Using these naturally will help you score higher for Fluency and Coherence.
Example:
Question: Do you like working out at the gym?
Answer: It’s definitely my cup of tea since I’m a gym rat who wants to stay fit. Besides that, not only does working out at the gym improve my physical fitness, but it also serves as a great outlet for releasing stress and boosting my mental clarity.

Giving Contrasting Ideas

To show flexibility in your language, try to include contrasting points by using connectives like but, however, still, yet, having said that, despite that, or then again.
This makes your answer sound more natural and less repetitive.

Showing Consequences

Words like as a result, so, therefore, hence help you wrap up your idea logically. Just remember not to overuse them, and variety is key.
Example:

Extending with If-Clauses
